A wall shelf is a good small project because every line is visible.
This Mission shelf uses two shelves, two side panels, and two back strips. The side profile gives it the Craftsman look, while the build stays manageable for a home shop.
The plan shows the original dado approach and a practical modern path. Keep the two side panels matched, keep the shelf locations level, and you end up with a small piece that looks built instead of bought.

Before you cut the sides:
Stack the two side panels and mark the shelf locations across both at once. If one side gets marked from the wrong edge, the shelf will show it every time you hang it on the wall.
This shelf is a good first Mission-style build because it gives you the rhythm of furniture work: square stock, matching sides, clean layout, careful sanding, and a finish that suits the grain.
Once you build one small piece cleanly, the next question usually comes fast: what should I build next?
